In 2009, Gagan co-founded Udemy, a now-$2B online education business. Udemy’s goal was to democratize education by enabling anyone to build online courses. This launched the “MOOC” era of online learning: Massively Open Online Courses.
In 2015, Wes co-founded the altMBA with Seth Godin, and grew the online school to thousands of students in 500 cities and 45 countries. While MOOCs have a 6-7% completion rate, the altMBA has a 96% completion rate. This was the beginning of a new era of cohort-based courses.
Maven is building a platform to help anyone build a cohort-based course and deliver a premium student experience at scale. Unlike small workshops or impersonal mass online classes, we will integrate both live and asynchronous components to engage students without needing to scale up instructor time or support staff.
Our mission is to democratize cohort-based courses. Right now, many experts and creators don't have the team, budget, or bandwidth to create a high quality cohort-based course. Inspired by the simplicity and power of prosumer tools like Shopify & Substack, we are building a platform that enables the best instructors around the world to build far more engaging, interactive, courses than MOOCs.
